The Drayton Valley RCMP has arrested an individual allegedly connected to a fire that occurred at the Aspen Waste Management Facility over the weekend.
A 36-year-old male resident of Hinton has been arrested and charged with arson, mischief over $5,000 and uttering threats.
At about midnight on July 25, Drayton Valley RCMP members and Drayton Valley/Brazeau County Fire Services were sent to extinguish a fire reported at a landfill near town. After speaking to several witnesses, police determined a male had intentionally set fire to a large pit with various plastics and other waste fuel.
The fire was reportedly extinguished by 3:40 a.m.
Police say they searched the nearby wooded area for the suspect with drone assistance. The RCMP says the suspect was located walking on Highway 22 at about 4:15 a.m., at which point he was arrested.
He was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody, with an appearance scheduled in the Alberta Court of Justice in Drayton Valley on Aug. 4.
