Alberta government investing over $2M into Drayton Valley and Warburg sport facilities

The Town of Drayton Valley is slated to receive a new indoor multi-sport facility with funding assistance coming from the Alberta government.

In an announcement Sept. 24, the province committed $1.5 million to constructing a year-round indoor multi-sport dome in Drayton Valley. Officials say it will feature a half soccer field, nine pickleball courts and one court for basketball and volleyball, and the project will be headed by the Drayton Valley Community Foundation (DVCF).

“The funding will make a meaningful difference in our ability to support families in Drayton Valley and throughout the surrounding area,” commented Rob Mulligan, DVCF Chair. “On behalf of the Drayton Valley Community Foundation, we are incredibly thankful to partner with the Government of Alberta, Minister Andrew Boitchenko and the Ministry of Tourism and Sport, and our municipal partners to help make an indoor sports complex in Drayton Valley a reality.”

The province also announced $700,375 to restore reliable ice-making capacity to the Warburg Hockey and Skating Arena Club. The project will involve replacing the refrigerated concrete floor and deteriorated piping components.

The investment comes from a pot of $14 million supporting 20 total projects across the province. The government has allocated the funding through its Active Communities Initiative, its first grant program dedicated to sport and recreation infrastructure.

These investments will enhance recreation opportunities and create lasting benefits for athletes of all ages across the province,” said Boitchenko, also MLA for Drayton Valley—Devon.

Government officials say the projects should stimulate more than $46 million in estimated economic activity across the province.
