After a narrow 2-1 overtime loss to the Olds Grizzlys in a road game last Friday, the Drayton Valley Thunder bounced back on Sunday with a 5-3 victory over the Calgary Canucks at home.
On Sept. 18 at the Olds Sportsplex, neither team scored in period one.
In the second frame, the Grizzlys secured a 1-0 lead at 8:04, but at 9:56, they earned a tripping minor.
This resulted in Drayton Valley’s Damian Hill tying things up 1-1 at 10:19 while the team had the man advantage. Daniel Zhou and Dylan Snelgrove assisted on the power play goal.
The teams stayed tied until the end of the game, sending it into overtime, where Olds scored for the 2-1 win.
At home on Sunday, the Drayton Valley Thunder opened the scoring at 2:56 in the first frame for a 1-0 lead. Loughlan McMullan scored his first of the season, unassisted.
The Calgary Canucks tied it up 1-1 with a power play goal just over halfway through the frame.
It wasn’t until 17:29 in period two that the Thunder were able to score again; Taynton Lavender netted another power play goal for the team, with assistance from Oskar Aitken-Salmons and Caedem Emmett, for a 2-1 lead.
Calgary tied it 2-2 again about six minutes into the third, but Drayton shot back to a one-point lead with a goal from Ryan Schrock, bringing the score to 3-2. The helper went to Damian Hill.
The Canucks tied the game again 3-3 at 13:54.
Then, with just over three minutes left in the game, the Thunder’s Aitken-Salmons scored once more for a 4-3 lead. George Monaghan and Colson Ganser assisted.
Hill also secured an unassisted empty-netter at 18:02 for the 5-3 win.
The Drayton Valley Thunder head to Fort McMurray on Friday, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26, for back-to-back roadies against the Oil Barons at 7 p.m.
