A special weather statement regarding funnel clouds has been issued for the Yellowhead County and Parkland County regions, including Evansburg, Wabamun and Stony Plain.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds and will likely remain that way until early this evening.
ECCC says these types of clouds are created by weak rotations under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. That rotation is normally not a danger, but it could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.
If conditions become more favourable to the development of a landspout tornado, ECCC officials say it will issue watches and warnings.
These tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage, but can still be dangerous, with the strength to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.
Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, the ECCC advises Albertans to take the sighting seriously and prepare to take shelter.
