A tornado recorded near Robb on July 17 has been rated as an EF2, the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) reports.
The EF Scale rates wind and tornado damage on a six-point scale ranging from zero (weakest) to five (strongest).
Citing witness accounts, the NTP says the tornado touched down south of Robb, near Coal Valley, just before 5 p.m. and tracked southeastward for 10.3 kilometres.
The tornado’s path left extensive tree damage that contributed to the EF2 rating, although the NTP says further investigation with treefall analysis tools may occur and change that rating.
As it stands as an EF2, peak winds were estimated to reach 190 kilometres per hour.
Alberta Storm Watch says this is the 27th confirmed tornado of the year in Alberta, up from the yearly average of 11. Six of those have been rated as EF2.
