Air quality warnings of high and moderate severity are in effect in northern Alberta.
A moderate-severity warning is in effect for Parkland County, near Wabamun and Carvel.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says smoke is causing very poor air quality and reduced visibility.
According to a station located in Edson, the closest to the affected area, the Air Quality Health Index for the region is forecast to reach a seven today, which is high risk. It currently sits at a six, indicating moderate risk.
ECCC officials say everyone’s health is at risk during heavy smoke conditions, regardless of their age or health status. As a result, residents of the impacted areas should limit their time outdoors.
Mild and common symptoms of smoke exposure include eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or a severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, officials say to seek immediate medical assistance.
The following groups are more likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke: people over the age of 65, pregnant people, infants and young children, people with an existing illness or chronic health condition and people who work outdoors. The ECCC encourages these individuals to limit or reschedule outdoor activities and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.
It is also recommended to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible and use a high-quality air filter if possible.
The ECCC says a well-constructed, well-fitting respirator mask (such as a NIOSH-certified N95 or equivalent respirator) can reduce your exposure to the fine particles in the smoke if you must spend time outdoors.
The warning is also in effect for the Entwistle, Fallis, Tomahawk, Keephills and Stony Plain areas.
