After two weekend games, the losing streak continues for the Drayton Valley Thunder.
They were edged 3-2 by the Canmore Eagles in Saturday’s home game.
Canmore opened the scoring at 17:09 for a 1-0 lead. Then, on a powerplay, Antonio Bevacqua fired back for Drayton with 23 seconds left in the frame to head into period two with a 1-1 tie. Taynton Lavender and Loughlan McMullan assisted.
The Eagles scored twice in period two, including a powerplay goal at 10:46, after the Thunder’s Bronsyn Mouille earned a tripping minor.
Bevacqua scored the Thunder’s second point in period three to finish 3-2. He was assisted by Dane Pyatt.
On Sunday, the Camrose Kodiaks came out on top with a 4-3 shootout win.
Period one saw the Kodiaks earn a 1-0 lead.
While Camrose’s Deacon Drummond was in the box for high sticking, Bevacqua scored Drayton’s first point on the powerplay at 1:27 in period two. The helper went to Taynton Lavender.
The Kodiaks broke the 1-1 tie with a shorthanded goal at 7:12 for a 2-1 lead.
Later, with Kodiak Kierin Osberg in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct, Drayton’s Taynton Lavender and Daniel Zhou assisted Jack Sears in netting a powerplay goal to tie it again at 2-2.
The Kodiaks scored at 3:16 in the third frame, earning a 3-2 lead, but Dane Pyatt and Will Jamieson answered for Drayton at 15:15, tying the match again and sending the game into overtime.
Neither team scored in overtime, so the match went to a shootout, where Bowen Grycan and Shane Purves both scored for Camrose. Caedem Emmett found the mark for the Thunder, but with a 2-1 result in the shootout, Camrose earned the tie-breaking point for a 4-3 win.
The Thunder are now just one point ahead of the last-place Olds Grizzlys in the AJHL South Division, with a record of 11-22-3-2.
