The Drayton Valley Thunder held on to a 1-1 tie until the end of the game on Jan. 16, when the Whitecourt Wolverines won in a shootout.
The Thunder’s Will Jamiseon scored the first goal of the game in period two, earning a 1-0 lead for Drayton. Breken Northgrave assisted.
Wolverine Tristan Slywka scored in frame three, bringing the teams to a 1-1 tie that lasted to the buzzer. He was assisted by Jett Quaschnick and Braden Nienaber.
The match then went to a shootout, where Whitecourt’s Quentin Bourne scored the winning goal.
Thunder goalie Kaden Clegg fielded 43 shots on the goal, while Wolverine Elliott Pratt took on 26 shots from the Thunder.
On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Thunder fell 8-4 to the Calgary Canucks.
The Canucks took control of the first period, netting three goals by the 12:36 mark, then the Thunder’s Nathan Cole scored at 16:38 to make it a 3-1 game in Calgary’s favour.
Frame two saw Calgary repeat that same start with three more goals, bumping them to a 6-1 advantage by 13:29.
Then at 15:37, the Canucks Josh Kelly and Grant Reid earned roughing minors, giving Drayton’s Jack Sears a chance to score on the powerplay. The helpers went to Caedem Emmett and Daniel Zhou.
Calgary netted one more before the end of the period, to head into the third frame with a 7-2 lead.
The Thunder built some momentum in period three, with Taynton Lavender and Daniel Zhou assisting Damian Hill with a powerplay goal at 4:44.
The momentum was interrupted by another goal by Calgary 59 seconds later, bringing the score to 8-3.
Jerrett Ross secured one more point for the team at 13:43, with assistance from Jack Sears and Cohen Carter, but the effort wasn’t enough to shake Calgary’s lead.
Calgary also outshot Drayton Valley 42-37.
