The Drayton Valley Thunder had a rough return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 3, falling 5-1 to the Drumheller Dragons.
Brayden Ryan-MacKay opened the scoring for the Dragons at 5:33 for a 1-0 lead, with assistance from Nick McLennan.
Two minutes later, Drumheller’s Lauchlan Kozicky went to the box with a cross-checking minor, putting Drayton Valley on a powerplay.
Drayton’s Jack Sears capitalized, netting his fourth goal of the season for a 1-1 tie. Caedem Emmett and Daniel Zhou got the helpers.
But at 9:35, Dragon Jackson DeGraves scored a shorthanded goal to finish the frame with a 2-1 lead.
Later, Tristan Payne netted one more for the Dragons in period two for a 3-1 lead.
The third frame saw Drumheller’s Jase Johnstone and Jensen Marsh score two more points for a 5-1 victory. Bradley Gallo and Tristan Payne assisted Johnstone, before Gallo and Johnstone assisted Marsh.
The Drayton Valley Thunder are back on the ice tonight in Calgary to take on the Canucks, who are one spot and 11 points ahead of the Thunder in the AJHL South Division.
