Get ready for a magical evening in Drayton Valley next week, with the return of Lanterns on the Pond.
On Friday, Sept. 5, Northview Pond will be lit with floating paper lanterns following their launch at 7:55 p.m.
Residents can head to the area at 6:30 p.m. to begin personally decorating their lanterns. The town will provide the lanterns for free, as well as some non-toxic markers, but you’re encouraged to bring your own markers, stickers or other decorations to make your lantern stand out.
There will also be live entertainment provided by Walter Gallant, plus free refreshments and treats.
“It’s a really enjoyable low-key atmosphere,” commented Hans van Klaveren, General Manager of Community Services & Recreation.
The event is also an opportunity for residents to learn more about the importance of community storm ponds, as van Klaveren explains.
The event began in 2020 to give residents an opportunity to see each other in the open air during the COVID-19 pandemic. While regulations required limited attendance in the first year, van Klaveren said the event has grown to more than 200 lanterns strong.
