One person has been arrested following a police dog search in the Drayton Valley area.
Drayton Valley RCMP say on Jan. 12, 2024, they received a call of a suspicious truck in the ditch on Hwy 22, near TR 502. However, Mounties say the driver of the vehicle fled before police arrival.
Officers say that although the vehicle had not been reported stolen, the licence plate and VIN information did not match. According to police, a cursory search of the truck revealed a sawed-off shotgun, bear mace and ID related to a person known by police. Considering the suspect had run into the woods while the temperatures were around -40 degrees Celsius and the possibility of more weapons, RCMP say Police Dog Services were called to expedite the search. According to Mounties, the suspect was located just under a kilometre from the road where he was subsequently arrested and treated for hypothermia.
RCMP say as a result of the investigation, Robert Sherwood, 41, a resident of St. Albert, was charged with:
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
- Possession of a weapon contrary to an order (x2);
- Fail to comply with probation order (x7); and
- Possession of a controlled substance (x3).
Police say Sherwood was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody, with his next court date being set for Feb. 6, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Drayton Valley.
