The Town of Drayton Valley is supporting Canadian oil and gas.
At Drayton Valley town council’s June 29 meeting, coucnil voted to support a resolution by the Town of Whitecourt at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).
The FCM resolution urges the federal government to promote the usage of Canadian oil and gas over foreign oil and gas, and that foreign oil and gas be held to the same environmental standards that Canadian oil and gas is held to.
Council unanimously supported the motion. Mayor Nancy Dodds spoke of how important the oil and gas sector is to Drayton Valley.
“We kind of get the bad rep of dirty oil, and that is probably the furthest from the truth,” said Dodds. “I think that it is important that we stand up for Alberta and for our economy.”
The FCM is an advocacy group that lobbies the federal government on behalf of Canadian municipalities. They have more than 6000 member municipalities across Canada. With enough support, the motion will be passed at the FCM conference this fall.
