The Town of Drayton Valley is working to correct an error in their zoning laws.
The subject was on the agenda for Town council’s June 15, 2022 meeting.
The land in question are four parcels along 50 Ave in Drayton Valley. One is currently a liquor store and the other three are fourplexes. Despite being right in the middle of Drayton Valley, the four properties are zoned as acreages.
The error came to light as the owner of the liquor store is trying to sell their business. Administration wanted to get the properties to their proper zoning: business for the liquor store, and residential for the fourplexes.
Chief among Town council’s questions was how an error like this could happen. Administration was unsure. They suggested it most likely happened during their last major review of the Town’s zoning in 2013.
Councillor Amila Gammina then wanted know how often Administration does a review. Administration replied that they usually do it every five or ten years. They added they are currently in the middle of one, and should be finished by Spring 2023.
In order to fix the error, the Town needs to go through the whole rezoning process. After first reading was passed at the Town’s June 15 meeting, it now goes to a public hearing, to be followed by a second and third reading.
Councillor Tom McGee called needing to go through the whole process to fix a mistake cumbersome.
