The Town of Drayton Valley is doing some upkeep to its cemetery bylaws.
At the Town of Drayton Valley’s May 25, 2022 council meeting, administration presented the revised bylaws.
According to Town officials, the bylaws were being brought in line with new provincial regulations.
As an example of that, Councillor Tom McGee inquired as to why the bylaws spelled out that an infant is someone under the age of 29 days. According to administration, that is the legal definition they found when doing their research.
McGee was also curious as to why the new bylaws prohibit the resale of cemetery plots, but transferring the lease was acceptable. Administration replied, it just makes tracking the changes in ownership easier.
Council was also wondering about the bylaws governing the addition of monuments to cemetery plots. As an example, Mayor Nancy Dodds suggested a bench.
Administration said they usually allow most things, within reason. Officials say the bylaws are mainly there to prevent the addition of anything too massive.
The new bylaws were passed.
