The Town of Drayton Valley is working on getting its water system up to date.
At Drayton Valley town council’s May 4, 2022 meeting, council received an update on their water distribution project from Jason Kopan of ISL Engineering and Land Services.
Kopan opened up his report by announcing that broken valves have been repaired at Drayton Valley’s Reservoir 2. With these repairs, the four pumps at the reservoir are now working as they were designed to, rather than constantly running all the time.
As Kopan went on to explain, all four pumps were running due to the leaks. As the four pumps were only designed to be a back-up system, there was always a worry that the four pumps were not up to the task, and that there would be a loss in water pressure. But now that everything is fixed, they only need to run one pump at a time, said Kopan.
With the repairs done, ISL Engineering is now moving on to Phase II. Phase II is the design phase for upgrades to Drayton Valley’s water distribution system to tie into the water treatment plant.
According to Kopan, there are limited connections from the water treatment plant into the town’s water distribution system, so they are looking at what work needs to be done so they can be connected on a full-time basis.
Kopan added that when the Town adopted its water master plan in 2016, the Town had a larger population. As such, some of the pumps and pipes that were installed in the water treatment plant are much larger than what is currently needed. The main thrust of their analysis is whether the larger pumps and pipes are now overpowered for what the Town needs, and how they might need to upgrade the Town’s water system to accommodate.
The analysis is anticipated to be done in around a month.
