It is going to be the tried and true for Canada Day in Drayton Valley this year.
At Drayton Valley town council’s April 13 meeting, council received an update from the Canada Day planning committee to find out how planning for this year’s events are going.
Jennifer Fynn, committee chair, reported they sought community feedback for new ideas back in January. However, as no one submitted any new ideas, Canada Day festivities will look the same as they have in past years, said Fynn.
Canada Day will start with a pancake breakfast at the Drayton Valley Legion Hall, hosted by the Drayton chapter of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Fynn also shared that the parade is once again being organized by the Drayton Valley chapter of the Lions Club, and will start at 10 a.m. on July 1.
The party will then start in Drayton Valley’s Rotary Park at 11 a.m. It will open with speeches from the mayor, the reeve of Brazeau County, and the local MLA.
Fynn announced that, among the confirmed entertainment for this year, are balloon artists, a photo booth, live music, and inflatables for the kids. Fynn added, however, they are still booking more entertainment.
The festivities will end around 3 p.m., followed be fireworks at West Valley Park at dusk.
As for financing, Fynn reported the committee has almost reached its/ fundraising goals. So far, they have received $11,000 from the Town, $5000 from Brazeau County, $5000 from the federal government, and $1700 from sponsors.
Councillor Amila Gammana was pleased with the report, saying it is great to have an in-person event this year.
“I think it is great that the event is back on again, and the community is getting back to some kind of normalcy,” said Gammana.
