The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are creeping up on the Drayton Valley Thunder. The Oil Barons beat the Thunder 5-1 on March 26, narrowing the Thunder’s lead in the series to 3-2.
The Thunder’s lone goal was the first of the game, as Moe Hakim scored unassisted at 5:01. But the Oil Barons managed to tie things up at 13:23. Justin Ross got the goal while Alex Izyk and Jesse Burchart helped with the assists. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Oil Barons broke the tie at 11:43 of the second period when Ty Hipkin scored on the power play, thanks to an assist from Lucas Jones and Chris Kobelka. The second ended with the Oil Barons in the lead 2-1.
The Oil Barons then cemented their lead with three unanswered goals in the third. Justin Ross scored at 10:09, thanks to an assist from Tyler Wallace. Then, Ty Hipkin scored twice within thirty seconds to give the Oil Barons the win and himself a hat trick. The first was on the power play at 19:26 with an assist from Rider McCallum. The second was on the power play at 19:41 with an assist from Nickolas de Beurs. Final score was 5-1 for the Oil Barons.
The Oil Barons just barely managed to outshoot the Thunder, 28-22. The Oil Barons had the better power play, going 3 for 4. The Thunder came up empty on the power play, going 0 for 3.
With this Oil Barons victory, the Thunder’s lead in the AJHL semi-final has been reduced to 3-2. The Thunder still have the chance to win the series on home ice on March 29.
