A Drayton Valley man accused of defrauding a local not-for-profit organization of more than $200,000 has been sentenced.
Eric Paul Butz, 36, was convicted of uttering a forged document and given a 22-month conditional sentence order in Leduc provincial court on Feb. 14, along with 24 months of probation.
Butz had originally been charged with fraud over $5000, forgery, and uttering forged documents.
Mounties began investigating allegations against Butz in September 2018 after the organization claimed they had been defrauded of a large sum of money by their treasurer over a four-year period.
At the time of the alleged fraud, police say Butz worked as a Certified Chartered Accountant in Drayton Valley. He was also elected to Drayton Valley town council in 2017, but served for only one year before resigning in October 2018.
RCMP did not name the organization that filed the complaint, but online records show Butz served as treasurer for the Drayton Valley Rotary Club.
