The Drayton Valley Thunder have earned their first win on their road trip. The Thunder beat the Whitecourt Wolverines 5-2 on Feb. 9
The Wolverines were first on the board, as Travis Baker scored on the power play 12:04 into the first period. Caleb MacDonald and Jayden Watson were credited with the assists. The Thunder responded at 16:54, as Ethan Browne scored with an assist from Brody Tallman. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Thunder then went on to dominate the second period, scoring four unanswered goals. First was Daniel Kernaghan, picking up an assist from Adam Oates. That was followed by Sammy May at 3:47, thanks to assists from Grayson Reid and Luca Ricci. Reid got one of his own on the power play at 12:52, with the assist from Ethan Browne and Brett Bamber. Browne then picked up his second goal of the night at 17:17, courtesy an assist from Kadyn Chabot and Hunter Price. The second period ended with the Thunder in an impressive 5-1 lead.
The Wolverines did manage to get one more on the board before the game was over. Jack Franklin scored at 13:49, with the assist from Tanner Komzak. The final score was 5-2 for the Thunder.
Despite coming up on the losing end, the Wolverines outshot the Thunder 37-25. The Wolverines were a bit better on the power play, going 1 for 2. The Thunder went 1 for 3.
The Thunder now have a record of 1-3 on their six game road trip. The road trip wraps up this weekend in Grande Prairie with a two game set against the Storm. First game is on Feb. 11, and the second on Feb. 12.
The Thunder have clinched their playoff berth in the Viterra AJHL North Division. They are currently sitting in fourth place, with 65 points and a record of 28-14-9.
