The Drayton Valley Thunder have increased their losing streak by one with a loss to the Lloydminister Bobcats on Feb. 7. The Bobcats beat the Thunder 3-2 in overtime.
All the action seemed to happen in the first period. The Bobcats scored at 1:51, as Hassan Akl picked up the assist from Jordan Borysiuk. The Thunder responded at 6:00, as Drew Sutton got an unassisted goal. The Bobcats took the lead at 7:35 in a reversal of their first goal, when Borysiuk got the goal while Akl got the assist. The Thunder tied things up at 7:58, as Ethan Browne scored with an assist from Rylan Brown. The first period ended in a 2-2 tie.
That’s the way things stayed for scoreless second and third periods. Thunders goalie Jackson Berry spent 48:37 of the game in net, with Byron Fancy getting 12:25.
The game ended in overtime though, as Ethan Aucoin scored the winner for the Bobcats at 3:58 on the power play, thanks to an assist from Mason Franz and Jordan Borysiuk.
The Bobcats outshot the Thunder 43-35. The Thunder did not have many power play opportunities, going 0 for 1. The Bobcats, meantime, were 1 for 2 on the power play.
The Thunder are now 0-3 on their six game road trip. Next stop is Whitecourt on Feb. 9 for a rematch against the Wolverines. Whitecourt was the second stop on the road trip on Feb. 4, where the Wolverines beat the Thunder 2-1 in a shootout.
The Thunder are holding steady at fourth place in the Viterra AJHL North Division, with 63 points and a record of 27-14-9. Despite being on a losing streak, the Thunder have clinched a playoff berth.
