The Drayton Valley Thunder increased their winning streak to four games after a 3-2 shootout victory over the Sherwood Park Crusaders Feb. 1.
The Crusaders were first out of the gate though when Mitchell Joss scored at 15:11, with assists from Evan Arnold and Logan Hauer. The Crusaders had a 1-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Crusaders scored on the power play early in the second when Tyler Miller scored at 2:52, thanks to assists from Caelum Dick and Bruce MacGregor. Hunter Price got the Thunder on the board, scoring in the final second of the second period. Price got the goal on the power play, with the assist from Ethan Browne. Score was 2-1 for the Crusaders at the end of the second.
It was déjà vu in the third period when Hunter Price scored again on the power play, and again with an assist from Ethan Browne. Price was also assisted by Kadyn Chabot. It all went down at 10:21 in the third. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie, and after a scoreless overtime period, the game went to a shootout.
Moe Hakim scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the victory to the Thunder.
The Crusaders outshot the Thunder 35-31. The teams were also 50 per cent on the power play, with the Crusaders going 1 for 2, while the Thunder went 2 for 4.
With the win, the Thunder are now on a four game winning streak. They are holding steady in fourth place in the Viterra AJHL North Division, with 61 points and a record of 27-13-7.
Groundhog Day will really feel like Groundhog Day, as the Thunder face the Crusaders again on Feb. 2. This time, though, the action moves to Sherwood Park.
