The Drayton Valley Thunder finished off their home stand undefeated as they crushed the Fort McMurray Oil Barons 7-3 on Jan. 18.
The Thunder got things going at 8:43, as Moe Hakim got the assist from Drew Sutton and Jack Silverberg. At the end of the first, the Thunder had a 1-0 lead.
The Thunder then went on to run the game in the second period. Hakim picked up a second goal at 2:15, thanks to an assist from Sammy May. Hakim got the natural hat trick on the power play at 6:55, with assists from Drew Sutton and Rylan Brown. Hakim then stepped back and let other Thunder players have a turn at scoring goals. Rylan Brown scored at 10:41, getting assists from Hunter Price and Kadyn Chabot. Brody Tallman was next at 16:02, receiving an assist from Rylan Brown. Grayson Reid capped the period at 19:13, courtesy of assists from Daniel Kernaghan and Matthew Strilets. At the end of second, the Thunder had an insurmountable 6-0 lead.
The Thunder increased their lead to 7-0 at 6:37 of the third period when Kadyn Chabot scored with assists from Ethan Browne and Hunter Price. At 7:10, the Oil Barons finally got on the board, as Tyler Wallace scored unassisted. The Oil Barons kept that momentum going, as Brendan Wang scored on the power play at 13:14. Wang was assisted by Tyler Wallace and Dylan Clark. The Oil Barons got one more before the buzzer sounded. Chris Kobelka scored with an assist from Danny Ciccarello at 17:39. Final score was 7-3 for the Thunder.
Despite the Thunder’s commanding lead, the Oil Barons outshot the Thunder 33-31. The two teams were evenly matched on the power play, each one going 1 for 5.
The Thunder now take their four game winning streak on the road. The Thunder will not be back at the Drayton Valley Omniplex until Feb. 1. First stop for the Thunder is Bonnyville on Jan. 21 to face the Pontiacs.
