The Drayton Valley Thunder started the new year with an overtime loss, falling to the Bonnyville Pontiacs 5-4 Tuesday night.
The Pontiacs got things going in the first period, as Charlie Russell scored unassisted at 13:25. The Thunder were not going to let that stand, as Moe Hakim scored with an assist from Jack Silverberg at 13:51. Then with 11 seconds left in the first, the Thunder took the lead, as Noah Lam scored with an assist from Stephen Kirkpatrick. At the end of the first, the Thunder had a 2-1 lead. The Thunder came on strong, outshooting the Pontiacs 10 to 2.
The Pontiacs tied the game at 9:08 in the second, as Noah Heinrich received assists from Kash Rasmussen and Will Hilfker. Lucas Krol helped the Thunder briefly take the lead at 11:01, however, as he scored unassisted. But the Pontiacs tied things up again at 12:00, as Trey Funk scored and picked up an assist from Kash Rasmussen. The Thunder continued to outshoot the Pontiacs 13 to 2, but at the end of the second, it was a 3-3 tie.
The Thunder took the lead at 5:43 in the third, as Brody Tallman scored and picked up assists from Andrew Larson and Stephen Kirkpatrick. But the Pontiacs were able to tie things up again at 7:05. Alex Power got the goal, thanks to assists from Charlie Russell and Sebastian Tamburro. The Thunder kept dominating the game, outshooting the Pontiacs 10 to 1, but the third period ended in a 4-4 tie.
The Pontiacs brought the game to a close at 3:58 in overtime, as JR Ashmead scored the game winner, with an assist from Sebastian Tamburro. Even in overtime, the Thunder played aggressively, outshooting the Pontiacs 2-1. But the Pontiacs came out on top with the 5-4 win.
The Thunder continue their start to 2022 on the road, with their next stop in Spruce Grove on Jan. 7 to take on the Saints.
The Thunder are currently fourth in the Viterra AJHL North Division, with 44 points and a record of 19-11-6.
