The Drayton Valley Municipal Library wants you to get outside and read a book this weekend.
On Nov. 20, the Library is hosting their first ever Book Walks.
Verna Wicks, Youth and Adult Programming Coordinator for the Library, explains the walk is an interactive outdoor activity.
“We have to kind of destroy the books to make this story walk by taking out the pages and then spreading out the pages on signs,” explains Wicks. “So as you are walking along, you are reading the book.”
The Library has prepared three books and will be placing them along three trails.
Alongside the Ivan to Park Trail, you will be reading Mechanimals by Chris Tougas.
At Northview Pond, you will be reading A Different Pond by Bao Phi.
And along the Rotary Pembina Nordic South Trails – also known as the Cemetery Trails – you will be reading The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.
“I thought The Gruffalo would be a good one to have in the woods, because that story is situated in the woods,” chuckles Wicks.
Participants will not be going home empty-handed. The Library has also prepared treat bags that you will be able to take home at the end of every trail.
Wicks warns that they only prepared 150 treat bags, so it is first come, first serve.
Wicks would also like to take a moment to thank their sponsors: the Yellowhead Regional Library for supplying the books, the Town of Drayton Valley, the Eagle Point and Blue Rapids Park Council, and the Pembina Nordic Ski Club for allowing them to use their trails, Fineline Signs for sign supplies, and the Community Parenting Coalition.
The Library is hosting the event on Nov. 20 to celebrate International Children’s Day. The trails open at 12 Noon.
