The Drayton Valley Thunder put up a good fight, but it ultimately was not enough against the Bonnyville Pontiacs.
The Pontiacs paid a visit to the Drayton Valley Omniplex on Nov. 9.
The Thunder got off to a good start, as Moe Hakim scored, getting the assist from Kadyn Chabot at 9:55. Just a minute later, at 10:49, Daniel Kernaghan lit the lamp, thanks to assists from Hunter Price and Rylan Brown to make it 2-0 Thunder. But the Pontiacs started fighting back. Nick Traggio scored with an assist from Sebastian Tamburro at 13:06 to close Drayton Valley’s lead to 2-1. Then the Pontiacs took advantage of a power play opportunity, as Matteo Giampa scored, getting an assist from Sebastian Tamburro at 15:22. The first ended in a 2-2 tie.
The Pontiacs carried their momentum into the second period, as Austin Saint scored on the power play just two minutes in, putting Bonnyville up 3-2. Saint then went on to assist Alex Power with a goal at 6:52 to make it 4-2 Pontiacs. The Thunder managed to get one more on the board before the second period ended though, as Tyler Blocha scored with assists from Moe Hakim and Kadyn Chabot at 15:31. At the end of the second, the Pontiacs were in the lead 4-3.
Bonnyville continued to dominate in the third period. At 5:30, Trey Funk got the assist from Michael Fairfax and Matthew Hennessey to make it 5-3. Then at 11:03, Alex Atwill scored, with assists coming from Chayce Schmidt and Nick Traggio to make it 6-3. The Thunder managed to pick up one more on the power play, however, as Brody Tallman scored with an assist from Rylan Brown and Moe Hakim at 14:58.
Final score was 6-4 for the Bonnyville Pontiacs.
The Pontiacs outshot the Thunder 37-30. They also had the stronger power play, going 2 for 5, compared to the Thunder’s 1 for 6.
The Thunder get to rest up now for the Brooks Bandits. The Bandits come to town on Nov. 12.
