It was a rough weekend for the Drayton Valley Thunder. The Thunder suffered two narrow losses on the road.
The first was on Oct. 15, where they lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Lloydminister Bobcats.
The Bobcats got things going in the first period, as Tegan Skehar scored, getting the assist from Nik Hoogendoorn. At the end of the first, it was 1-0 Bobcats.
The Bobcats got their second goal in the second period, as Matthew Swanson scored with assists from Chad MacLean and Kolton Shindle. The Thunder responded in kind, however, as Daniel Kernaghan scored with assists from Adam Oates and Hunter Price. At the end of the second, it was 2-1 for the Bobcats.
The Thunder managed to tie things up in the third, as Grayson Reid scored, getting the assist from Kadyn Chabot. At the end of the third, the game was tied at two goals each.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game went to a shootout. Matthew Swanson and Mack Stewart each scored for the Bobcats, while the Thunder’s Evan Forrest and Kadyn Chabot missed their two shots. The win went to the Bobcats.
On Oct. 16, the Thunder travelled down the road to Bonnyville to take on the Pontiacs. The Thunder lost 3-2 to the Pontiacs in overtime.
After a scoreless first period, the Pontiacs got on the board in the second period as Ethan Sundar scored, with assists coming from Austin Saint and Kash Rasmussen. The Thunder responded with one of their own, however, as Lucas Krol scored, getting assists from Grayson Reid and Quinton Gove. The game was tied with one goal each at the end of the second.
The Thunder got one in the third period, thanks to Drew Sutton lighting the lamp and getting assists from Brett Bamber and Rylan Brown. But, with just 16 seconds left in the third, Austin Saint with the Pontiacs scored, getting assists from Kash Rasmussen and Ethan Sundar to push the game into overtime.
One minute and fourteen seconds into overtime, Charlie Russel scored an unassisted goal to give the win to the Pontiacs.
The Drayton Valley Thunder now return home to the Ominiplex. They will be hosting the Spruce Grove Saints on Oct. 19.
