The Town of Drayton Valley is taking steps to revise its combative sports commission.
The new bylaw would expand the combative sports commission to govern mixed martial arts in Drayton Valley.
The Town received the request from SBG Drayton Valley. The gym, meanwhile, is hoping to host a mixed martial arts tournament.
Some town councillors were in favour of the move. Councillor Corey Peebles said that having such a commission could lead to more community engagement, and make Drayton a hub for the sport.
“What I like about this is that this came from the community,” said Peebles. “And they are saying ‘we want to do something that utilized our facilities, fills our hotels, gets people coming to restaurants.’”
Others were a little more apprehensive. Councillor Bill Ballas felt that they need more information before moving ahead.
“I feel that we, as a town, need to do our due diligence to make sure that we are protected, liability wise,” said Ballas. “I do not want to jeopardize any taxpayer dollars for any sport.”
Council voted to pass first reading of the new combative sport commission bylaws. It will now go to a public hearing.
