A last minute venue change worked to the Drayton Valley Thunder’s advantage, as they beat the Fort McMurray Oil Barons 2-1 on Sept. 24.
Kadyn Chabot of the Thunder started the scoring with the assist from Dylan Price and Brett Bamber. But, the Oil Barons responded in kind, with Nickolas de Beurs getting the assist from Aidyn Hutchinson and Tyler Wallace. At the end of the first, the score was tied 1-1.
After a scoreless second period, Drew Sutton of the Thunder got the assist from Quinton Gove and Jack Silverberg, giving the Thunder the 2-1 win.
The Oil Barons found vengeance on Sept. 25, when they beat the Thunder 2-1 in overtime.
The Thunder’s Rylan Brown opened the scoring with an assist from Stephen Kirkpatrick, making it 1-0 at the end of the first.
After a scoreless second period, Aidyn Hutchinson of the Oil Barons got the assist from Simon Diaz and Nickolas de Beurs early in the third, tying it up at one goal apiece. It stayed that way, however, pushing the game into overtime.
The Oil Barons scored four minutes and 50 seconds into overtime, giving the Oil Barons the 2-1 win. Tyler Wallace got the assist from Rider McCallum.
These two games were originally scheduled to take place in Fort McMurray, but got moved to Drayton Valley as the Oil Baron’s new arena faced construction delays. As part of the switch, Drayton and Fort McMurray’s February set has been moved to Fort McMurray.
The Drayton Valley Thunder now make their way to Brooks, to take part in next weekend’s AJHL Showcase.
