Residents of Drayton Valley will soon have the chance to light up the night sky.
On Sept. 22, the Town will be hosting its latest Lanterns on the Pond event.
Families can head down to Northview Pond at 6 p.m., where they can decorate a lantern. At 7 p.m., organizers say the lanterns will be set afloat on the pond.
Jennifer Stone, Intergovernmental Relations and Communications for the Town of Drayton Valley, says they held the event several times last year as it met all the requirements under COVID-19 restrictions.
“We also did it in September last year when everybody was really starting to feel the effects of being cooped up,” says Stone. “It was just something that people could do safely, social distanced, and come and be with their families and do, and it was very popular.”
The Town is using the event as a teaching opportunity. As Northview Pond is a storm water pond, the Town will be educating people about storm water pond safety.
“Once upon a time, we did allow skating on the pond and that kind of thing, but it can be dangerous,” explains Stone. “Because of the nature of storm ponds and how water flows in and out, so there’s some pamphlets that we have prepared that will be providing that education.”
There are only 200 lanterns available for people to decorate. You are also asked to bring your own art supplies to decorate them.
