Alberta Health Services is bringing its mobile mammography service to Drayton Valley.
The ScreenTest mobile mammography trailer will be stationed in the parking lot of the Drayton Valley Omniplex on Aug. 26–28, 30, 31, and from Sept. 1–4.
Chidi Okoli, Health Promotions Facilitator for ScreenTest, says they come to town when clients are due for a check-up.
“Usually clients will receive a letter about six weeks before the clinic dates so they’re aware of the date and location of the mobile unit in the community,” says Okoli.
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast and has proven to be one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer. Okoli emphasizes that early detection of the disease is key to beating it.
“At an early stage, there are more treatment options, and the client has a better chance of survival and a better health outcome.”
Women between the ages of 50 and 74 are the group most at-risk of developing breast cancer, thus are encouraged to get screened.
Okoli adds that women between the ages of 40 and 49 can also be screened for breast cancer, and they should discuss it with their doctor.
Because of COVID-19, a number of safety precautions are in place to ensure the safety of clients and staff at the mobile clinic.
“We’re all wearing masks, there’s plexiglass and physical distancing,” says Okoli.
Another precaution currently being taken is not accepting walk-ins. If you would like to have a screening, you must book an appointment or be referred by your doctor.
