The Town of Drayton Valley is partnering with the U of A and the city of Edmonton for a study on economic development. Over the next three years, the study will focus on rural and urban economic development policies.
The study will focus on their different approaches to economic development, and how it can be applied to other communities across the country. For example, in Drayton, there’ll be a focus on the town’s educational partnerships.
Researcher Maria Mayan says that Alberta provides an important context for this work, noting that while Alberta has some of the highest incomes in the country, they also have the greatest inequity.
In a statement to the press, Drayton Valley mayor Michael Doerkson says that Drayton Valley has a lot of advantages when it comes to economic development that sets them apart from major cities, and this research will examine how education can benefit smaller communities.
This isn’t the first time the town has participated in such a study…last year, they partnered in a study to develop a successful proposal for federal funding to explore the town’s Zero-Free Tuition program.
