The Breton region was stunned at the declaration of a tornado warning on the night of July 21.
According to Environment Canada meteorologist Kyle Fougere, the storm was showing really strong rotation on radar.
“While watching this storm develop, we believe it did have the potential to develop a tornado, which is why there was a tornado warning,” says Fougere.
While a funnel cloud was sighted, Fougere also says they currently have no pictures or evidence of any tornado damage.
The storm was centered in a sparsely populated area, which he notes makes confirmation difficult.
If you do have any pictures of any storm damage, Fougere says you can e-mail them to abstorm@canada.ca so they can better assess the storm. Or, you can post your pictures to social media with the hashtag #ABStorm.
While Breton got a tornado warning, Drayton Valley and the rest of the region remained under a tornado watch.
It was the result of two significant storms rolling in off the foothills.
According to Fougere, they showed strong rotation, which brings with it the ability to produce tornados. In situations like that, Environment Canada will elevate a severe thunderstorm watch to a tornado watch.
