The Canadian War Amps are celebrating the 75th anniversary of their key tag service. Very soon, you’ll be getting your key tags in your mailbox. Put them on your keys. If you ever lose your keys, all someone who finds them has to do is drop them in the nearest Canada post mailbox, and the War Amps will mail them back to you.
To celebrate their 75th anniversary, the War Amps are taking on the theme “You Are a Part of What We Do” this year. War Amps public awareness officer Jamie Lunn says that they arrived at that theme because they really wanted to thank Canadians for all the support they’ve given the War Amps over the years.
The War Amps has long used the funds they raise to provide emotional support and funding for artificial limbs for amputees across Canada. They soon expanded to more than veterans. Through their War Amps Child Amputee, or CHAMP Program, they offer comprehensive services to child amputees and their families.
As an example of a beneficiary of the CHAMP program, this year’s key tags will come with a letter from Tracie and Jeremy Blakslee. Their daughter Michaela was born missing part of her left arm, along with some fingers and toes. The Blakslees reached out to the War Amps, and they were able to help them adjust. Lunn said they helped them with funding for her artificial arm, plus getting the family into seminars to provide emotional support.
While the Canadian War Amps is celebrating the 75th anniversary of their key tag service, Lunn would like to remind you that the Canadian War Amps has been active for more than one hundred years, as they first started out helping amputees returning from World War I.
