This weekend, Albertans will be able to head out and experience the farm life.
August 14 and 15 are Alberta Open Farms Days. More than 100 farms all across the province will be holding open houses, so people can see what they’re about, and how food gets from field to grocery store to plate.
Tim Carson, CEO of the Alberta Agricultural Societies, says there are quite a few adventures to be had.
“We have everything from alpacas to zucchinis that people can go out and find and explore, and create a new relationship with our great producers here in our province, as we connect producers with consumers,” says Carson.
In and around Drayton Valley, one of the participating farms is Grey Owl Meadery. Carson notes craft distilleries is a growing sector in Alberta agriculture.
“Saskatoons and cherries and crab apples are all being used for craft creations in our own province, and right in our backyard,” he says.
Carson hopes this initiative will help educate people on how farms help drive our local economies.
“Everything from the bed & breakfast to the corn mazes to the u-picks, those are entrepreneurs who are driving economies in these rural communities.”
In addition to the Grey Owl Meadery, Stonepost Farms and Wild Country Gardens are also participating. You can find out more at albertaopenfarmdays.ca.
