1) Why are you running to be a Member of Parliament?
I love my country. I was not intending on running federally at this point and time but when I heard the NDP couldn’t find a candidate in Parkland I put my name forward. Knowing what it’s like to be a progressive voter in conservative strongholds and not always having the options to vote for the party I’d like to, I felt it was very important that residents of Parkland have all options before them when voting in this election. To me, that is what true democracy is.
2) Why should people vote for you, and what skills do you have that make you suitable for this role?
Unlike other candidates, I’m just an average person and not a professional, life-long politician. That is what we need right now. I’m a mother to a young adult son, an aunt to nephews with special needs, a daughter to aging parents, a community volunteer, an educator. My realities and concerns are very similar to many other Canadians. Will my son find work in a strong economy with affordable housing? Will my nephews and parents have access to the critical healthcare needed or will there continue to be doctor and nursing shortages? Will I be able to afford to retire when the time comes? I’ve never been one to just complain about issues. I’m a solution seeker.
3) What will you advocate for; and do you intend to fully tow the party line?
As previously mentioned, I will always advocate for people above all. If government doesn’t take care of its people and do whatever possible to make lives better, when what is its role? But that means ALL people, especially the most vulnerable populations. A country needs a strong economy to be able to do that, however, it is so much more than that. What kind of society have we created where ultra-wealth is the ultimate goal, while we idly stand by and watch others struggle and suffer and many times judge them for their struggles? I will follow the lead of the Federal NDP party to make sure the people of this country are put before other partisan objectives that do not improve the lives and livelihoods of all Canadians. However, I also have no problem speaking up about any party polities that would not do so.
4) How do you believe Canada’s federal government should tackle its current predicament with the United States, and where do you sit on Canadian sovereignty?
How is ‘where do I sit on Canadian sovereignty?’ even a question? I am a proud Canadian and would hope every other candidate is Canadian above all else as well, or why are they running for political office in this country? How we should handle the United States is to become even less reliant on trade or purchasing partnerships with the US. Strengthen Canadian industries and form new alliances and trade partners so that we are never put in this position again.
