The town of Drayton Valley is worrying about how a rash of thefts at the construction site for the new aquatic centre might affect the project.
The town put the notice on their Facebook page last week, asking the residents to help monitor the construction site. “If you happen to be driving by, coming home late at night or at any time, drive by the site, and if you see anything unsavory in nature, just call the RCMP,” asks the town’s General Manager of Community Services Annette Driessen.
The town has already beefed up security measures, such as adding security cameras to the site, and are debating if more are needed. But Driessen adds it’s not just security measures that will drive up the costs, but also purchasing replacement materials, and then waiting for those materials to arrive. “When you think about mobilizing workers, mobilizing equipment, having equipment sit still, and that equipment is on a rental basis, every penny starts to add up.”
Driessen continues that when you consider all the community groups that banded together to make this project happen, you’re hurting the community when you steal from the construction site. “This is not anybody’s private project. This is something that benefits the greater community including a lot of visitors that will be coming here.”
If you do spot anything suspicious near the construction site, please contact the RCMP. The projected cost of the new aquatic centre is $21 million.
