Westakwin RCMP have arrested a suspect following a stand-off in late December.
On Monday, Dec. 30, Mounties responded to a report of an assault at a rural home on Township Road 441 in Wetaskiwin County. After several failed attempts to contact the suspect, police say the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team was dispatched to assist and they obtained a warrant to enter the house.
Officers say the suspect opened fire on them when they entered the house, forcing them to withdraw, issue a shelter-in-place order, and attempt to de-escalate the situation. No officers were injured in the shooting.
After several hours, Mounties say the suspect surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody where he was treated for minor injuries. Police also recovered several items from the home, as shown below.
Chief Superintendent Dale Kendall, says this incident is a good reminder of the dangers officers face when responding to these kinds of reports.
“This incident highlights the dangers our officers face when responding to reports of armed and dangerous individuals. “ says Chief Superintendent Kendall, “ When these high risk events occur, the RCMP deploys our Critical Incident Program members which includes the Emergency Response Team as well as crisis negotiators who’s goal is to safely contain and deescalate these events whenever possible.”
The Wetaskiwin General Investigation Section has taken over the investigation and charged 34-year-old Eric Dylan Dixon with the following:
- Attempted murder with a firearm
- Resisting a peace officer
- Assault
- Forcible confinement
- Uttering threats
Dixon was taken before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody with his next court date set for Jan. 9, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Wetaskiwin.
