The Drayton Valley Thunder played back-to-back games against the Devon Xtreme on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9, winning one game and losing the other.
On Friday, Nov. 8, the Thunder hosted the Xtreme as the wrap-up to the day’s Celebrating Oil Country Feature Town events.
The Xtreme jumped out to an early lead with a goal from Malcom Baar at 2:18. Baar’s ninth goal of the season was assisted by Xander Schulte and Brynn MacLean.
Harper LoLacher tied the game 1-1 for the Thunder at 4:22, with assists from Ben Winkelmann and Ben Buckley. That was LoLacher’s seventh goal of the season.
Mason Finley responded for the Xtreme with his third goal of the season at 11:57. Jaxen Smyth and Tyler Pretty were credited with the assists.
Zach Bansley re-tied the game 2-2 at 14:20, with his seventh goal of the season, assisted by Luke Marley and Billy Hooson.
Devon’s Tyler Pretty then scored his fifth goal of the season at 19:44, with Dylan Bidyk and Mason Finley credited with the assists.
At the end of the first period, the Drayton Valley Thunder had outshot the Devon Xtreme 21-15, but the Xtreme took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
Drayton Valley’s Cooper Brown opened the scoring in the second period with his eighth goal of the season at 2:00, tying the game 3-3. Brown’s goal was assisted by Luke Marley and Taynton Lavender.
Devon’s Levy Kozma then scored on the power play at 17:32, to put the Extreme back on top, 4-3. Malcom Baar was credited with the assist on the go-ahead goal.
At the end of the second period, both teams had put 14 shots on net but the Xtreme took a 4-3 lead into the second intermission.
Dryden Tomkow scored the only goal of the third period for the Thunder at 9:13. It was his third goal of the season and assisted by Luke Marley and Connor Wolitski, forcing an overtime frame.
At the end of the third period, the Thunder had outshot the Xtreme 19-5 in their efforts to tie the game.
Brynn MacLean secured the 5-4 overtime victory for the Xtreme just 1:38 into the extra frame with his second goal of the season. The game-winning-goal was assisted by Lucas Knorr and Levy Kozma.
The Devon Xtreme outshot the Drayton Valley Thunder 1-0 in overtime, but it was the Thunder who outshot the Xtreme 54-35 in total.
Drayton Valley Thunder goaltender Nicholas Cristiano made 30 saves on 35 shots.
Devon Xtreme goaltender Preston Lewis made 50 saves on 54 shots in support of the Xtreme’s 5-4 victory.

On Saturday, Nov. 9, the Thunder took a trip to Devon for a rematch against the Xtreme, winning this matchup 2-1.
The Devon Xtreme outshot the Drayton Valley Thunder 13-12 in the first period, however, neither team could get on the board.
Marco Oliviero opened the scoring for Drayton Valley just 1:39 into the second period to give the visitors the first lead of the game. Oliviero’s first goal of the season came unassisted.
Tyler Pretty then tied the game for the Xtreme at 4:51. Jaxson Martin was credited with the assist on Pretty’s sixth goal of the season.
At the end of the second period, the Drayton Valley Thunder had outshot the Devon Xtreme 12-8.
The Devon Xtreme outshot the Drayton Valley Thunder 11-6 in the third period but neither team was able to score a goal, leading to overtime.
Jace Moffatt scored the game-winning goal just 1:08 into the extra fame to secure the Thunder’s 2-1 victory.
Both teams put one shot on net in overtime, with Devon outshooting Drayton Valley 33-31 in total.
Devon Xtreme goaltender Preston Lewis made 29 saves on 31 shots.
Drayton Valley Thunder goaltender Nicholas Cristiano made 32 saves on 33 shots in support of their 2-1 win.

With this win, the Thunder are now 7-7-2-2, for a total of 18 points, putting them in fifth in the Southern Division and eighth in the overall league standings.
The Thunders’ next game is Friday, Nov. 15, as they play host to the Bonnyville Pontiacs. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
