A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Brazeau County and area, including Drayton Valley, Devon, Rimbey and Pigeon Lake for Tuesday, June 11.
According to officials with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), conditions in the afternoon and evening of June 11 will be favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce winds and hail with the potential to cause damage to property and injure people or even lead to the formation of a tornado.
Officials say strong winds can cause damage to buildings, down trees and even blow large enough vehicles off the road. Experts say lightning kills or injures many Canadians every year and are urging residents to seek shelter during a major thunderstorm saying, “Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!”
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Severe Thunderstorm Watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
Officials say they will release more updates as they become available.
