Roger Quick, a central Albertan through and through, is a passionate Red Cross volunteer committed to supporting individuals and communities in need across Canada and beyond.
Quick’s generosity is being highlighted as part of National Volunteer Week, which runs April 14-20, but is a Canadian Red Cross Initiative for April 6-12.
Quick has dedicated nine years to volunteering with the Red Cross and has been actively engaged in emergency responses from house fires to wildfires, and says he had made some genuine connections with people in the process.
“I really like helping people,” says Quick. “Some of the best people I’ve met have been fellow volunteers as well as people that I’ve been able to help through the years.”
During spring and summer 2023, when wildfires ravaged around Alberta, Quick supported people evacuated from their homes in the Drayton Valley area, Edson area, northern Alberta, and from the Northwest Territories.
Quick says supporting the community is his way of repaying the support he has received in the past.
“It’s an opportunity to give back to my community,” he explains. “There was a time when I was in a position where I needed some help and there were people who helped me. I was really super grateful for the assistance they gave me, so I was looking for a way to give back. Through the Red Cross, I’ve been able to give back more than ten-fold what I received”
Quick also helped support people as they returned to their homes in Drayton Valley and Edson when it was safe to do so.
When it comes to this wildfire season, Quick has very simple advice for residents.
“Be prepared.”
The Red Cross is looking for volunteers, he also notes.
“Once the season is over, we are looking for volunteers to join the Red Cross,” he says. “Last year when I was helping with the re-entry to Drayton Valley and Edson, I actually had people who were asking how they can help and give back to their community.”
