Alberta’s government says it is pursuing a stronger voice on the national stage by expanding the province’s presence in the nation’s capital with a new office.
The government says it continues its work to ensure the province is treated as a senior partner in Confederation and that the concerns of Albertans are heard by the federal government.
Officials say the Alberta Ottawa Office is set to play a key role in promoting the province and will help create stronger relationships with governments in Ottawa and across Canada while increasing the province’s advocacy on matters of importance to Albertans.
“This office opening could not have come at a more important time for our province,” says Premier Danielle Smith. She continues, “A strong Alberta means a strong Canada, but this federal government is enacting policies that hurt both. I am very pleased that we will have a centre for advocacy and information right here within the capital city so that Alberta’s strengths and concerns are able to be more clearly and quickly communicated.”
Premier Danielle Smith joined James Carpenter, Alberta’s senior representative to Ottawa, to celebrate the office’s opening on Feb. 5. Carpenter was appointed as the senior representative to Ottawa in September 2023.
“Promoting Alberta’s interests and priorities in Ottawa is critical to securing a fair deal for Albertans. This office is expected to strengthen Alberta’s relationships with federal decision makers and promote Alberta as the best place to trade, invest and travel,” says Carpenter.
According to officials, the office is located in Constitution Square in downtown Ottawa, blocks away from Parliament, where officials say staff can support the important work being done by all ministries of Alberta’s government.
