4:47 a.m. – Brazeau County – Twp Rd 502/Hwy 22 – Members responded to a report of a suspicious truck in the ditch. The complainant advised the male with the truck wasn’t saying much and then took off into the adjacent woods. When members arrived, they determined the truck was not stolen, but last registered in Ontario, and the plate attached didn’t match. A cursory search of the truck located a sawed-off shotgun, bear mace and ID related to a known offender. Due in part to the extreme cold and real risk of death to the suspect, members called out PDS (Police Dog Service) who attended, and a track was initiated with a Drayton Valley RCMP member assisting, in temperatures hovering around minus-40 Celsius. The suspect was located hiding in an outbuilding on a property, about ¾ of a km “as the crow files” distant. Paramedics attended and transported the male to hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia. When medically cleared he was returned to cells to await a telephone bail hearing. 41-year-old Robert Sherwood was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of possession of a weapon contrary to order, seven counts of failing to comply with probation order and three counts of possession of a controlled substance.
