The Drayton Valley Thunder welcomed the Bonnyville Pontiacs for two games over the weekend.
The first matchup would see the Pontiacs getting the better of the Thunder, winning 4-2.
Bonnyville would open the scoring nine minutes into the first period as Trey Funk and Nicolas Beaudoin would set up Matteo Giampa on the power play to make it 1-0 Pontiacs. However, the Thunder would tie the game up with three minutes left in the first frame as Cody Pisarczyk would get his 14th of the season, thanks to a power play set up by Stephen Kirkpatrick and Luca Ricci to make it ones across the board.
Bonnyville would be quick to regain the lead as Trey Funk and Max Seguin would set up Nicolas Beaudoin just 32 seconds into the second period to give the Pontiacs the 2-1 lead. Bonnyville would then get another one ten minutes later as Liam Cavan would get his second of the season and shorthanded, with Ludovik Tardif and Ethan Look getting the apples on the play to put the Pontiacs up 3-1. The Pontiacs would then get their third straight goal as Matteo Giampa would do it all himself for his 25th of the season to make it a 4-1 game.
Drayton Valley would the score the game’s last goal with under a second left to play in the third as Matthias Bessey and Odin George would find Brody Spencer-Ha for his sixth of the season to finish off the game with a score of 4-2.
Shots in the game were 42-18 in favour of the Pontiacs.
Game two saw the Thunder get some redemption as they would beat the very same Pontiacs, 7-3.
However, Bonnyville would open the scoring for the game at the 9:48 mark as Brent Hoshowski and Trey Funk would find Matteo Giampa for his 26th of the season to give the Pontiacs the 1-0 lead.
Drayton Valley would be quick to tie the game up just under two minutes into the second frame as Stephen Kirkpatrick would get his 11th of the season with Odin George and Travis Verbeek getting the assists on the play to tie the game up 1-1. Drayton Valley would then score four minutes later for their first lead of the weekend as Cody Pisarczyk and Brendan Mairs would find Daniel Kernaghan for his 25th of the season, on the power play, to give the Thunder the 2-1 lead. It wouldn’t be long before the Pontiacs tied it up as Max Seguin would score shorthanded to tie it up at two a piece two minutes later. Soon afterwards, the Thunder would gain control of the lead once again as Daniel Kernaghan and Stephen Kirkpatrick would help out Brendan Mairs for his 18th of the season to make it 3-2 Thunder. Not even a full three minutes later, Daniel Kernaghan would get his second of the game, on the power play, with Jack Silverberg and Brendan Mairs getting the special teams assists to give the Thunder a two goal lead, 4-2. The Thunder would continue the scoring streak as Brody Spencer-Ha and Hayden Fechner would find Jack Silverberg for his ninth of the season to make it three straight goals for the Thunder, 5-2. However, Bonnyville would get a goal before the middle frame was up as Chayce Schmidt would set up JR Ashmead for his eighth of the season to make it a 5-3 game.
Drayton Valley would get another one just under 15 minutes into the final period as Brendan Mairs and Jack Silverberg would find Daniel Kernaghan for his hat trick goal to make it a three goal lead once again for the Thunder, 6-3. The Thunder would then get the final goal as Brendan Mairs would get his second of the game and 19th of the season with Daniel Kernaghan and Matthias Bessey getting the helpers to give the Thunder the 7-3 win.
Shots in the game were 46-22 in favour of Bonnyville.
The Thunders next contest is on Tuesday, February 21, when they welcome the Spruce Grove Saints for a 7:30 p.m. face-off.
