In their final game of 2022 on Friday, Dec. 30, the Drayton Valley Thunder faced off against the Whitecourt Wolverines for the sixth and final time of the regular season.
The Thunder, however, would lose 6-2 to the Wolverines at the Omniplex in back-to-back losses against Whitecourt, losing 4-3 the night before at the Scott Safety Centre.
Whitecourt’s Kaiden Wiltsie would open up the scoring for the game halfway through the first period with Jarred Feist picking up the apple on the play to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Five minutes into the second frame, Kaiden Wiltsie would then bury his second of the game and 10th of the season, with Aiden Long and Caleb MacDonald getting the assists on the play to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead. Drayton Valley would respond just nine seconds later with Daniel Kernaghan and Brendan Mairs assisting Jaxson Martin for his second of the season to cut the Wolverines lead in half. The game’s fourth goal would come with just five minutes left in the frame as the Wolverine’s Braden Keeble would score with Spencer Rheaume and Colby Browne picking up the assists on the powerplay to regain the two goal lead for the Wolverines, 3-1.
The third period would see Kaiden Wiltsie get his hat trick goal, unassisted and just two minutes into the period, giving the Wolverines the largest lead of the game to that point, 4-1. Just seven minutes later, Colby Browne and Spencer Rheaume would set up Braden Keeble on the power play for his second of the game and third of the season to make it a four goa lead, 5-1. The Wolverines would then tag on another goal at 16:34, this time with Chase Broda getting his 19th of the season, thanks to a set up play from Caleb MacDonald and Evan Smutney to give the Wolverines their fourth straight goal, 6-1. Then with just under a minute left, the Thunder’s Daniel Kernaghan would find the back of the net,, with Brendan Mairs and Gavin Middendorf picking up the assists on the power play goal to make the final score 6-2.
Shots in the game were 40-34 in favour of the Thunder.
The Thunder’s next game is on Wednesday when they take on the Sherwood Park Crusaders.
