The Drayton Valley Shelter Pods are open for business.
The Town of Drayton Valley took to their Facebook page on July 12 to announce that the pods are now fully operational and open for use.
Shelter Pods are a new concept in temporary housing. When a person is in need of a place to stay for the night, they head down to the Shelter Pods. They contact a volunteer through the on-site intercom, and the volunteer buzzes them in. Inside the pod, there are very basic accommodations, usually nothing more than a mat to sleep on.
The Town hopes this will be a successor to the Community Mat Program, which offers temporary housing in the basement of the Baptist Church.
Drayton Valley’s Shelter Pods consist of two renovated camp shacks, each one containing six pods. The first shack was paid for by a grant from the Rural Development Network. The second was paid for by the Drayton Valley organization Humans Helping Humans Foundation.
Other sponsors the Town would like to thank include Hayduk Picker Service Shop, Big West Machine and Welding, Intercon Messaging, Alta-Fab, Phone Experts, Tri Electric, All Choice Rentals, Parkway Enterprises, Advantage Manufacturing, Affordable Lock and Key, Superior Propane, and Drayton Valley Home Hardware.
The Town also sends out a special thanks to Telus for installing the intercom and the infrastructure to allow volunteers to remotely buzz people in.
The Shelter Pods are located at 5309 – 54 Street, across from the RCMP station.
