The Town of Drayton Valley is up for a major award.
The Town has nominated itself for an Alberta Municipalities Award — specifically, a Municipal Environment Award for their FoodCycler project.
The FoodCycler is a device used for processing and composting household waste. The Town was conducting a pilot project with the FoodCyclers, in which they were given to 100 Drayton residents to help reduce waste. The pilot project officially ended on June 27.
The criteria for the award is that the project must have a good environmental impact, fosters behavioural changes, is original and innovative, is easily scalable, and has social and economic benefits. Town administration believes the FoodCycler project checks all the boxes.
Mayor Nancy Dodds says the Town is quite proud of the project.
βIt shows innovation and advanced technology in waste management,β shares Dodds. βI know I have been using mine like crazy and I am hearing lots of feedback from the community as well. People are excited to have it.β
The winners of the Alberta Municipalities Awards will be announced at the Alberta Municipalities Convention this September.
