The Drayton Valley Community Foundation (DVCF) is welcoming summer with a bang.
June 24, 2022 is the DVCF Summer Kickoff Party, in which the DVCF will be closing off downtown Drayton Valley for a massive street party.
Tara Middlemiss, executive director for the DVCF, says the event is modeled after “A Taste Of” festivals. Nine local restaurants will be on hand to serve up their signature dishes.
Middlemiss shares that the restaurants are excited to be a part of it.
“It is a great chance for them to introduce people to a menu item that they may not have tried before, try to get some new business for themselves, but most of them are just excited to support the community,” says Middlemiss.
When you arrive, you will be given a free meal ticket to eat one of the dishes of your choosing. Additional meal tickets will cost $7.
There is more to the event than food, however. Middlemiss promises a large variety of children’s activities, including glitter tattoos and a balloon artist. Disney princesses and Spider-Man will also make an appearance.
For the grown-ups, there will be beer gardens, with live music from Drayton Valley favourites, the Mad Jacks.
52 Street, meanwhile, will host many local vendors who will be selling their wares. You will find everything from home based businesses to some of Drayton’s larger stores.
The idea to host the Summer Kickoff Party grew out of the Summer Street Party that the DVCF hosted in August 2021. According to Middlemiss, that street party was wildly successful. The DVCF planned for 900 people, but 2500 came out.
“It was kind of a last minute decision,” explains Middlemiss. “Some of the COVID-19 restrictions had just lifted, so we thought it was the perfect opportunity to try to bring the town together.”
The success of that street party led the DVCF to plan two for 2022. The first one is June 24, while the second one is Aug. 19.
Middlemiss hopes that people come out to celebrate Drayton Valley.
“Get out there and have community spirit again, which is something I think we have all been lacking a little bit,” says Middlemiss. “And just enjoy the Town we all live in.”
The DVCF Summer Kickoff Party is June 24, 2022, in downtown Drayton Valley. The event starts at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served from 5 – 8 p.m., and the beer gardens will be open until midnight.
