The Drayton Valley Triathlon is set to run, and bike, and swim. on May 7.
The triathlon was last competed in 2019, but had to skip the last two years because of COVID-19 restrictions. It is also the first Alberta triathlon sanctioned this season.
Race Director Sharron Oakey says they are cautiously optimistic about their first triathlon back.
“We are remembering how to do things. We are hoping we are fit enough to compete. There is a lot of emotion going on,” explained Oakey.
The triathlon typically gets between 100 and 200 competitors from across the province. There are several races depending on your skill level and age. Oakey says a particular favourite of hers is the High Performance Youth race, which is for youth between the ages of 13 and 21.
“They have a very exciting race that we put in between the adults and the kids, which is fun to watch,” shares Oakey.
The event needs lots of volunteers to make it work, and Oakey is grateful for all of them.
“We need a lot volunteers to help us control traffic, to keep it safe for the athletes,” explained Oakey. “They’re also needed to help keep participants safe in the pool, and to help give them directions on the run.”
The triathlon begins and ends in Rotary Park, with the swimming portion of the race taking place in the Park Valley Pool. The running and cycling portions will be held throughout Drayton Valley.
