Brazeau County is showing its support for the Drayton Valley Pro Rodeo.
At the County’s April 5, 2022 meeting, County council approved in-kind support to the rodeo in the amount of $1547.75.
The Seventh Annual Drayton Valley Pro Rodeo takes place from April 28–May 1 this year in the Drayton Valley Omniplex. 400 contestants and 4,000 spectators are expected to come out.
The County’s in-kind support consists of supplying and hauling the sand.
In a statement, the County says this act supports the local business community and showcases Brazeau County.
With more people wanting to get outside and celebrate, Brazeau County is launching an education campaign to encourage fireworks safety.
At the County’s April 5, 2022 meeting, Council instructed administration to put together an information package on the impacts of fireworks on agricultural neighbours, and to include it in the May/June and November/December issues of the county newsletter.
Council also approved the purchase of five signs for the fire department. The signs will be loaned out to Brazeau County residents when they get a fire permit for fireworks, so they can warn their neighbours of the impending festivities.
County officials say Brazeau County’s Agricultural Services Board has long worked to get the word out about fireworks and how they can impact agricultural operations. Officials note that fireworks have the potential to spook livestock, adding that spooked animals can severely injure themselves and others, which may lead to the death of the animal.
Fireworks are also said to be not good for apiary operations. Over-wintering beehives can also be subject to stress from the sudden, loud noises of fireworks. This can cause bees to leave their cluster and freeze to death, resulting in the loss of the hive.
