The Drayton Valley Thunder have pulled ahead in their playoff series against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
Thanks to a 4-3 overtime win on March 22, the Thunder now lead the series 2-1.
The Thunder got things rolling just 37 seconds into the first period. Jack Silverberg got the goal, while Ethan Browne got the assist. The Oil Barons responded at 14:57, when Tristan Kimmen scored. Rider McCallum picked up the assist. But the Thunder pulled ahead in the final minute of the period. Noah Lamb scored on the power play at 19:17, thanks to assists from Brody Tallman and Kadyn Chabot. At the end of the first, the Thunder had a 2-1 lead.
The Oil Barons tied things up in the second period. Brendan Wang scored at 11:45, courtesy of assists from Max McCoy and Nickolas de Beurs. The second period ended in a 2-2 tie.
Then Noah Lamb got his second goal of the night and put the Thunder in the lead on the power play at 5:47 in the third. Brody Tallman got the assist. But the Oil Barons were able to tie things up again. Ryder Matter got the goal and Tristan Kimmen got the assist at 18:50. With regulation ending in a 3-3 tie, the game was going to overtime.
Both teams put up a fight, but overtime was all over at 13:15. Daniel Kernaghan got the game-winner for the Thunder, with Sammy May getting the assist. Final score was 4-3 for the Thunder.
The teams were evenly matched, each getting 46 shots on net. The Thunder had the better power play, however, going 2 for 6, while the Oil Barons went 0 for 2.
Having won the last two games in the series to earn a 2-1 lead, the Thunder are hoping to continue that momentum into Game 4 on March 23. Game 4 is at the Drayton Valley Omniplex, while Game 5 is on March 26 in Fort McMurray.
